Skiing, Art, Music, and Empowerment: Overcoming Obstacles with Jonah
by Jonah, WAS student
I first Found Wasatch adaptive sports when I was 13 but it wasn’t me who found it. It was my dad. One day he just asked if I wanted to ski and I said “how would I be able to do that?” Then he told me more about WAS and how they accommodate to people with disabilities and help them learn how to ski, bike and paddle board.
I’ve skied with WAS for about 6 years now and I want to try out biking as well. One of the things I like about WAS is that for one they have helped me learn to ski, but if you ask me on a deeper sense, they have helped me become more independent and that helped me learn to overcome difficult tasks in my life.
I never really knew how I got into art. I just know I’ve been drawing since I can remember. Because of my disability, I am unable to use my hands, so I use my mouth to hold a pencil. Because of this, a lot of people are intrigued by my art and how I do it.
I love to draw and illustrate and one of my favorite things to draw are cars, I think they’re pretty cool and I hope to one to be designer for a car company. What inspires me too draw/create is mostly music. I get a lot of ideas when I’m listening to my music whenever I’m listening to a song, I can see designs pop up in my mind and all I want to do is put that on a piece of paper.
