Scott Beck: Reflecting Back

Scott and two of his fiercest companions (his skis) in Portillo, Chile.

For the past four years, I have had the opportunity to serve as chair of the board of directors of Wasatch Adaptive Sports. I was drawn to WAS because, as a native Utahn, father of a daughter with special needs, and an avid skier and cyclist, inclusive recreation has been central to my life and that of my family.

Throughout my four-year tenure as chair, I have had the pleasure of working alongside our staff and board to redefine the potential of our programs, partnerships, and, ultimately, the impact of Wasatch Adaptive Sports in our community. While the milestones have been many- a record number of new students last year, opening a second office in Murray, a growing leadership team, and a burgeoning partnership with Intermountain Healthcare- no measurement is more important to WAS than the ongoing success of our students.

One of our students, Mackenzie, recently shared with us, “I always look forward to getting on a bike and the feeling of independence that comes with it. Feeling capable and confident helps me be a happier and healthier human being. The WAS program helps me be those things.” Can’t we all relate to this sense of freedom that accompanies a bluebird day in the mountains or that feeling when you surprise yourself by biking further than you thought possible? This is the experience our team strives to create for every student at Wasatch Adaptive Sports.

It has been an honor to follow Stefani Kimche as chair and I look forward to continuing to serve on the board under the leadership of Miguel Rovira in July 2019.  I want to share my profound gratitude for each and every one of you. Student, volunteer, donor, and partner alike, thanks to you, our mission impacts many.

From our WAS family to yours, have a bright and happy holiday season!
