Veterans Programs

The mission of the Wasatch Adaptive Sports Veterans Program is to provide outdoor recreational and social activities for Veterans coping with military-related physical, cognitive, and emotional difficulties. Our goal is to get veterans out of the home and participating in activities that promote camaraderie, self-esteem, and a connection to the outdoors. All programs (equipment, food, etc.) are available to veterans free of charge.

Backcountry Awareness Clinic for Veterans

This six-part program is run by veterans (also professional mountain guides) for veterans throughout the winter season in the WAS yurt at Snowbird. Participants learn about companion rescue, the avalanche triangle, mountain weather and terrain, snowpack, human factors and more as they explore recreating in the backcountry. In-classroom and hands-on instruction precedes the afternoon spent on AT skis or split boards.

Introduction to Mountain Recreation Clinic for Veterans

This program is designed to introduce veterans to various types of winter recreation such as skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and Nordic skiing. Each session focuses on the skills and technique involved in each sport with the opportunity to choose a specialization for the remainder of the winter.

Summer Retreats

Throughout the summer, these day-long and overnight retreats bring together male- and female-specific groups for a shared experience of paddle boarding and/or mountain biking. All meals included. Enjoy a “glamping” experience by spending the night in the WAS yurt alongside the Little Cottonwood Creek or in The North Face Dome tents.

A bi-monthly favorite for children, adults and their families, the bowling program encourages community, camaraderie, strength and overall fun. Equipment such as bowling ramps and handles make this sport accessible to individuals of all abilities.

Adaptive Yoga

Our yoga program emphasizes the experience of the pose rather than achieving it. Core principles include grounding, expansion, balance and rhythm through use of various props.

We also offer a variety of other Winter and Summer Programs for Veterans:

  • Skiing / Snowboarding
  • Nordic Skiing
  • Snowshoeing
  • Sled Hockey and Indoor Cycling
  • Cycling
  • Mountain Biking
  • Paddle Boarding
  • Fishing
  • Hiking / Orienteering

Full and partial scholarships are available for those who qualify. Advanced reservations are required for all winter and summer activities and are based on availability. Full payment is required to confirm reservation.

An assessment of the student is done prior to the first lesson or activity to determine the student’s needs.
